2 Million Children and One Pajamad Llama Break Reading Record at Cozy Pajama Story Time!
United Way Success By 6 and the Duluth Public Library joined together to provide fun evening story times this October. October 6th was a special reading of this year’s Read for the Record book Llama Llama Red Pajama. Read for the Record is Jumpstart’s national literacy and educational achievement initiative that aims to have a record number of children reading the same book on the same day. “Cozy Pajama Story Time”continued every Thursday in October. Story time was from 6:30-7:00 pm and activity time from 7:00-7:30 pm and was free to the public.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Contrary to popular belief, children start developing literacy skills beginning at birth through every day interactions with the adults and children in their lives — sharing books, telling stories, singing songs, talking to one another, or pointing out and naming objects.
Research shows that children that enter kindergarten without the necessary early literacy skills often have trouble reading in the third grade, an indicator which predicts success in reaching high school graduation.
Cozy Pajama Story Time is perfect for children ages 0-8! They can come in their pajamas, listen to a story or two, and do a short activity! It is a great way to share the love of reading with young children! Story time is so much more than reading words on a page-it is an all encompassing activity that promotes development in a growing child’s brain, social skills, emotions, and language! Of course, parents, relatives, guardians and siblings are all welcome to come in their pajamas as well!
We hope you had fun at Cozy Pajama Story Times!
