Early Childhood Screening Starts at Age 3

Do you have a child who is 3 years old?

If you have a child who is three years old, it's time to make an appointment for their required early childhood screening. Your child is required to have this screening before they can enter school in the state of Minnesota but it is recommended at age three. It's also an opportunity to learn more about your child's development.

Purpose:

The purpose of this screening is to detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help early, before they start school. Educational or medical referral may follow, if needed.

Screening is FREE and much more comprehensive than a well child exam at a physician’s office. It's also a great way to get answers to your parenting questions and concerns.

Why should I schedule my three year old for Early Childhood Screening?
• It gives you valuable information about your child’s development, information about community resources and time to help prepare your child for success in school.

• Even if you have no concerns about your child’s health, growth, or development, you must still provide your child’s Early Childhood  Screening Summary and an immunization record before he or she will be allowed to start school. (Getting it done early will be one less thing you have to do before sending your child to school for the first time.)

What it’s not
Early Childhood Screening is not a test for kindergarten. Children develop at different rates. The screening takes into account the age of your child and what is appropriate development for that age. Waiting until your child is older deprives you of information about your child, resource information and time to fully prepare your child for success in school.

Screening includes:

  • Standardized screening of large and small muscles
  • thinking, language and communication skills
  • social and emotional development
  • vision
  • hearing
  • height and weight
  • immunization status
