Through a special fund raising initiative aptly called Power of the Purse, supporters from across the United States and in the Duluth area donate special, one-of-a-kind, hand made, and designer purses for auction at the annual event.   A keynote speaker is chosen each year to inform and enlighten nearly 300 event participants and to draw attention to the importance of early childhood literacy.

Check back for updates as we plan for Power of the Purse 2014.

WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

Join United Way of Greater Duluth's Women's Leadership Council (WLC) and experience a powerful collaboration of women committed to improving the quality of life in the Greater Duluth area. Our goal is to energize and inspire women to make a difference—by advocating for issues important to them, taking a leadership role in advancing United Way's work, and making a personal commitment of time, talent, or treasure.

Mission
To inspire, educate and engage a powerful, passionate network of women who strengthen our community through focused investment of their time, talent, and treasure.

Focus
Effort of United Way's Women's Leadership Council is focused on improving early childhood care and education. Close to 50% of children in Minnesota are not fully prepared to succeed in school with noticeable differences in readiness where race and socioeconomic factors are considered. Of 50 kindergartners struggling to learn to read, for example, 44 will still be struggling in 3rd grade and fall even further behind after 4th grade, dropping out of high school or not graduating on time. By investing in our youth at an early age, the community sees improved wealth and health through increased tax base, reduced crime, and increased qualified individuals in the workforce.  This equates to a stronger community. WLC Invests in the Future
WLC actively supports the fundamentals of early childhood through major support of an early literacy program called Imagination Library ~ a free monthly book program offered to all children through age 5 in the Duluth area and up the North Shore.  Over 3,400 children are currently enrolled with distribution of over 70,000 books since the program started in August 2008.
