Capacity Building Grant

Who is Eligible?
Emphasis is placed on organizations that serve community needs. Eligible applicants include Community-based, Faith-based and Tribal Entity organizations in St. Louis, Cook, Lake and Carlton counties of Minnesota, and Douglas County in Wisconsin.

Grants will be given to 20-25 organizations per year that serve people in need such as: individuals and families experiencing poverty; at-risk youth; people transitioning from welfare to work; people facing addiction; former prisoners re-entering the community, etc.

Sample Use of Funds:

  • Capacity-building Training/Activities
  • Developing a Strategic Plan
  • Learning about Grant Writing
  • Technical Assistance & Consultation
  • Equipment or Supplies such as computers or computer software that can improve program services.

Customized Training, Grants and Assistance for:

Leadership Development
Designed to help individuals in leadership positions obtain the professional guidance, training and support necessary to be stronger and more engaged leaders, which strengthens the effectiveness of the organization.

Organizational Development
Designed to increase effectiveness by learning how to perform better, efficiently accessing and utilizing resources and better adapting to new technologies, markets and challenges.

Program Development
Designed to empower organizations so they are able to effectively plan, implement and evaluate programs that better meets the needs of its clients.

Revenue Development
Increases organization’s effectiveness to raise and leverage funds in order to successfully implement and sustain the work of the organization.

Community Engagement
To effectively develop communications strategies to inform, promote and engage multi-sector community involvement in achieving the organization’s goals.

Information sessions for organizations interested in applying for a grant will be held throughout the five-county service area. Meetings are open to all community organizations. Please contact Lake Superior Initiative for dates and times.

Supporting Partners:
The Lake Superior Initiative partners include the Twin Ports Area Non-Profit Coalition and Northwoods Nonprofits, experienced providers of capacity-building training.

Other partner organizations include the Arrowhead Interfaith Council, the University of Minnesota Duluth - Office of Civic Engagement, University of Minnesota Extension and Service Learning, Duluth Public Schools and True North Volunteer Center.
