Lori matters
At just eleven years
old, Lori found herself in a very sad situation. Her
stepmother died, leaving behind her dad and two younger
siblings. It's been emotionally devastating and physically
draining for the entire family.
While helping Lori cope with the
loss, her dad, Darren, also wants to make sure Lori has some
strong female role models in her life. That's why he
encouraged her to take part in Girl Power at the YWCA. This
program, funded by United Way, gives Lori a chance to spend
time with other girls her age and with some young women.
Darren hopes having females Lori can talk to about her
thoughts and feelings will help fill the void that's been
left in her young life.
Lori also enjoys spending time
at the Boys & Girls Club and has twice gone to YMCA Camp
Miller on a scholarship. She is also on the waiting list to
be paired with a mentor from Mentor Duluth. These programs
are all funded by United Way.
While her life will never be the
same, Lori is able to begin to move on - and build hope for
a brighter future. Thanks to programs like Girl Power, Lori
has been able to discover what truly matters: the
opportunity for kids to reach their maximum, full potential.
