True
Friends
For a
long time, Bob would hear about Mentor Duluth and the kids
who were waiting for a mentor. He noticed that many of
them were interested in the same things he was: camping,
fishing, and biking. But Bob wasn’t sure if he was ready
for mentoring. He knew it was going to be a major
commitment and didn’t want to get into it unless he was
completely sure.
After
contemplating the decision for a while, and going through
the screening and interviewing process at Mentor Duluth,
Bob was paired with Nick, a quiet, shy eight year old. Two
years later, Nick and Bob’s friendship continues to
flourish. (All mentor pairs are asked to stay in a
relationship for at least a year to create stability in
the child’s life.)
Not only
did Nick have the chance to meet someone who was willing
to take time out of his day to spend with him, he also
found a lifelong friend who truly cares about him. And the
benefits are twofold. Bob often comments that he knows the
program has been good for Nick, but it’s been even
better for him. Thanks to programs like Mentor Duluth, Bob
and Nick discovered what truly matters: a lasting
relationship between true friends.
