Proventil Albuterol Oral Inhalation for Asthma Relief

Proventil (albuterol) is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases airflow to the lungs.

What is it used to treat?

1. Bronchial asthma:

  • relief of bronchial asthma attacks, including exacerbation of severe bronchial asthma;
  • prevention of bronchospasm attacks associated with exposure to an allergen or caused by physical activity;
  • use as one of the components in long-term maintenance therapy of bronchial asthma.

2. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), accompanied by reversible airway obstruction, chronic bronchitis.

Is it a rescue inhaler?

Yes. This medicine is considered a rescue inhaler, which means that it is used to relax muscles in the lungs and keep open airways during an asthma attack.

What class of drug is Proventil?

The active ingredient in the drug is albuterol, a selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. In therapeutic doses, it acts on the β2-adrenergic receptors of the smooth muscles of the bronchi, having a slight effect on the β1-receptors of the myocardium. It has a pronounced broncho-dilating effect, preventing or stopping bronchospasm, reduces resistance in the airways, increases lung capacity.

In recommended therapeutic doses, it does not adversely affect the cardiovascular system, does not cause an increase in blood pressure. To a lesser extent, in comparison with drugs of this group, it has a positive chrono- and inotropic effect. The medicine causes expansion of the coronary arteries. It has a number of metabolic effects: it reduces the concentration of potassium in plasma, affects glycogenolysis and insulin secretion, has a hyperglycemic (especially in patients with bronchial asthma) and lipolytic effect, increasing the risk of acidosis.

How to use this medicine?

The medicine is intended for inhalation use only.

Only a doctor can decide whether to increase the dose or frequency of inhalation therapy.

It is not recommended to use the medicine more than 4 times a day. The need for frequent use of maximum doses of albuterol or for a sudden increase in dose indicates a worsening of the disease.

Adults and children over 12 years old:

Relief of a bronchospasm attack: the recommended dose is 100-200 mcg (1-2 inhalations).

Prevention of bronchospasm attacks associated with exposure to an allergen or caused by physical activity: the recommended dose is 200 μg (2 inhalations) 10-15 minutes before exposure to the provoking factor. Long-term maintenance therapy: the recommended dose is up to 200 μg (2 inhalations) 4 times a day. Maximum daily dose: 1200 mcg (12 inhalations).

Children from 2 to 12 years old:

Relief of a bronchospasm attack: the recommended dose is 100-200 mcg (1-2 inhalations).

Prevention of bronchospasm attacks associated with exposure to an allergen or caused by physical activity: the recommended dose is 100-200 μg (1-2 inhalations) 10-15 minutes before exposure to the provoking factor. Long-term maintenance therapy: the recommended dose is up to 200 μg (2 inhalations) 4 times a day. Maximum daily dose: 800 mcg (8 inhalations).

Is albuterol and Proventil the same thing?

Albuterol sulfate is the official generic name for Proventil in the United States. Albuterol is the active ingredient of Proventil, which means both medicines have the same indications, uses, dosage, side effects, interactions, contraindications, etc.

Proventil vs Ventolin

Proventil and Ventolin are both asthma inhalers of rescue type. These are both brand inhalers. They are manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies. They contain the same main substance albuterol. The recommended dosage for Proventil is 120 mcg. The recommended dosage for Ventolin is 100 mcg.

How often can you use this inhaler?

The usual dosage is 2 inhalations every 4-6 hours. To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm, do 2 inhalations 15-30 minutes before you exercise. The drug remains active for about 4-6 hours.

If you use your inhaler too often, you may have side effects such as a fast heartbeat, feel shaky, a headache, increased rate of breathing.

How long does it take for this medicine to work?

The medicine provides relief from symptoms within 15 to 20 minutes. That’s why it is considered a fast-acting bronchodilator.

Can albuterol damage your heart?

The medicine may significantly change your blood pressure, heart rate, or pulse. This could worsen your heart condition. If you have diabetes, albuterol can make worsen your blood sugar control. If you have diabetes, consult your doctor about whether this medicine is safe for you.

Can I overdose on albuterol?

Symptoms of albuterol overdose: hypokalemia, decreased blood pressure, tachycardia, muscle tremor, vomiting, agitation, hyperglycemia, hypoxemia, lactic acidosis, leukocytosis, respiratory alkalosis, headache, hallucinations, convulsions, tachyarrhythmia, ventricular flutter.

Treatment: symptomatic (the drug should be discontinued); if you have a fast heart rate, cardioselective beta-blockers should be administered (with caution because of the risk of bronchospasm).

What happens if you use an inhaler and don’t need it?

It is not recommended to use any drug for a condition that you do not have. For albuterol inhalers, however, the risks are relatively low compared to diabetic medication, which may sharply reduce your blood sugar.

Who should not use this medicine?

Do not use Proventil if you have any of the following conditions:

  • hypersensitivity to any component of the drug;
  • children’s age up to 2 years;
  • management of preterm labor;
  • threatening abortion.

Use with caution: a history of fast heart rate, myocarditis, heart defects, aortic stenosis, coronary heart disease, severe chronic heart failure, arterial hypertension, thyrotoxicosis, pheochromocytoma, decompensated diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, epileptic attacks, renal or liver failure; administration of non-selective β2-blockers, pregnancy, lactation.

Can albuterol interact with any drugs?

Avoid using this medicine together with:

  • non-selective β-adrenergic receptor blockers;
  • central nervous system stimulants;
  • theophylline and other xanthines;
  • m-anticholinergics (including inhalation);
  • diuretics and glucocorticosteroids.

Can Proventil cause side effects?

Generally, the drug is tolerated well. In some cases, it can cause side effects:

  • immune system: dermatitis, hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema, rash;
  • metabolic processes: hypokalemia;
  • nervous system: tremor, headache, anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, hyperactivity;
  • cardiovascular system: tachycardia, palpitations, expansion of peripheral vessels with skin flushing, discomfort or chest pain, arrhythmia, including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, extrasystole, decreased blood pressure and collapse;
  • respiratory system: cough, irritation of the respiratory tract, bronchospasm (paradoxical or caused by hypersensitivity to the drug);
  • gastrointestinal tract: dryness or irritation of the oral mucosa and pharynx, change in taste, nausea, vomiting;
    musculoskeletal system: muscle cramps.

Use during pregnancy

This drug can be prescribed to pregnant women only when the expected benefit to the patient outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

The likelihood of penetration of albuterol into breast milk is not excluded, therefore it is not recommended to prescribe it to lactating women unless the expected benefit to the patient outweighs the potential risk to the child. There is no evidence of whether albuterol present in breast milk has a harmful effect on the newborn.
