Zithromax (azithromycin) is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. It is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria.
What is it used to treat?
The medicine is used for infectious processes provoked by microbes sensitive to this antibiotic:
- infections of the skin, soft tissues (erysipelas, infected dermatosis, acne, impetigo);
- borreliosis (Lyme disease) at the initial stage – erythema migrans;
- infections of the ENT organs (laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, rhinitis, tracheitis);
- urinary tract infections, incl. chlamydial.
How does it work?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic of the macrolide group with a bacteriostatic effect (inhibits the growth of pathogenic microorganisms). It is active against a wide variety of microbes. The mechanism of action is associated with the suppression of protein production in the cells of the microbe. In high concentrations, it can have a bactericidal (killing microbes) effect.
Microorganisms susceptible to this antibiotic: gram-negative aerobes (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Legionella pneumophila, Haemophilus influenzae, Pasteurella multocida), gram-positive aerobes (Staphylococcus aureus, S. pneumococcus aureus) spp., Clostridium perfringens, Porphyriomonas spp.), others (Chlamydia phneumoniae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydia psittaci, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Borrelia burgdorferi).
Microbes capable of developing resistance to this antibiotic: gram-positive aerobes (penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae).
Azithromycin-resistant microorganisms: gram-positive aerobes (Staphylococci, Enterococcus faecalis), Bacteroides fragilis.
Is Zithromax a strong antibiotic?

How to take Zithromax?
The tablet must be swallowed whole, with water.
The required dose should be taken once a day – 2 hours after or one hour before a meal.
The standard dose for an adult (including the elderly) is 500 mg / day for 3 days.
- Erythema migrans: 1 day – 1000 mg, 2-5 days – 500 mg daily;
- Acne vulgaris: 3 days – 500 mg / day, then 500 mg / day once a week for 9 weeks;
- Chlamydial infection (Chlamidia trachomatis): 1000 mg is usually given as a single dose.
Zithromax pediatric dose: The total dose in children aged 1 year and older is 30 mg/kg administered as 10 mg/kg once daily for three days. Children weighing more than 45 kg are prescribed adult doses.
Who should not take this medicine?
Contraindications include:
- severe impairment (failure) of the kidneys and / or liver;
- allergy to macrolide antibiotics;
- use of certain medications (ergotamine, dihydroergotamine);
- children weighing less than 45 kg.
The antibiotic is used with caution in case of prolongation of Q – T (ECG), predisposition to arrhythmias, moderate renal / liver dysfunction.
Can I overdose on this medicine?
If you exceed the recommended dose of azithromycin, you can get an overdose.
Overdose symptoms: frequent and / or loose stools, vomiting, hearing impairment.
Treatment: gastric lavage with a probe, intake of enterosorbents, symptomatic therapy.
What are the possible side effects?

- Perceptual disorders: Deafness, reversible hearing impairment, impairment of smell / taste, tinnitus;
- Cardiovascular disorders: rhythm disturbances (heartbeat, arrhythmia, widening of the Q – T interval, ventricular tachycardia);
- Digestive disorders: changes in stool (constipation, diarrhea), flatulence (bloating), nausea, anorexia, discoloration of the tongue, abdominal cramps / pains, pseudomembranous colitis (inflammation of the colon), impaired outflow of bile (cholestatic jaundice ), hepatitis, liver necrosis, liver failure;
- Motor system disorders: joint pain;
- Allergic reactions: rashes, photosensitization (sun intolerance), urticaria, angioedema (swelling of the face, tongue, lips with respiratory failure), erythema multiforme, anaphylactic shock, itching, contact dermatitis;
- Genitourinary system disorders: acute kidney failure, nephritis (inflammation of the kidney tissue);
- Others: vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina), candidiasis (fungal infection).
Can I use this drug during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, this medicine can be prescribed only when the need for treatment of the woman outweighs the risk to the child (according to the doctor).
This antibiotic is excreted in milk, and therefore it is not used during breastfeeding.
Can you drink alcohol with Zithromax?
You cannot combine it with alcoholic products. Alcohol has a detrimental effect on the pharmacological properties of the drug. It slows down metabolism, changes the drug concentration and helps infectious diseases develop due to a decrease in the bioavailability of the active substance. In addition, alcohol provokes side effects.
What drugs interact with azithromycin?
Azithromycin is metabolized in the liver. It can interact with other drugs that also enter the liver. Scientists have not yet explored all possible interactions.
