Zovirax is the brand name for acyclovir, a synthetic nucleoside analogue active against herpes viruses. It is an antiviral drug.
What is the medicine used to treat?
The drug is used for the treatment of primary and chronic recurrent infections caused by viruses of the genus Varicella-zoster or Herpes simplex. Its systematic use reduces the likelihood of an increase in areas of rashes on the skin or mucous membranes and, in addition, reduces the risk of developing visceral complications. It accelerates the formation of crusts in the area of the rash, reduces the severity of pain during exacerbation of herpes zoster.
It is used for the treatment of genital lesions in persons with reduced and normal immunity and the treatment or prevention of shingles. It helps to reduce the likelihood of exacerbations of herpes infections in those who suffer from an immune system dysfunction caused by bone marrow transplantation or anticancer chemotherapy.
How quickly does Zovirax work?
It may take up to two hours to reach peak plasma concentrations after acyclovir administration. It may take up to three days for symptom reduction; however, the medicine should be taken until the course prescribed by a doctor is completed. The drug works best when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. If you do not feel better after four days of using the medicine, consult a doctor.
Is it an antibiotic?
No, it is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body. The medicine is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, such as genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox.
Does the drug speed up healing?
Yes, the medicine can speed up healing of the sores and decrease symptoms (tingling, pain, burning, itching). However, this medication does not cure herpes and it does not prevent passing the infection to someone else.
How to take this medicine?
The tablet form of Acyclovir is used to treat lesions on the mucous membranes or skin caused by a viral infection.
The available Zovirax dosages are 200mg, 400mg, and 800mg.
Adults usually take 1 tab. 5 times a day; 1 tab. and 4 times a day for the prevention of relapse. When treating shingles, you should take 4 tablets 5 times a day. Children aged 2 years and older usually take an adult dosage. Children who have not reached 2 years of age take half the adult dose.
Who should not take acyclovir?
Contraindications for use include hypersensitivity to acyclovir, valacyclovir; lactation period (breastfeeding); children under 3 years of age; lactase deficiency, lactose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption (for dosage forms containing lactose).
With caution: chronic renal failure; conditions accompanied by dehydration (including vomiting, diarrhea); pregnancy.
When should I stop using Zovirax?
The medicine is very well tolerated, however, in some cases, it may cause side effects: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, and various allergic reactions. If you have any of the mentioned side effects, stop using the medicine and consult a doctor.

Drugs that block tubular secretion (for example, probenecid and cimetidine) can increase the concentration of acyclovir in the blood plasma, increase the AUC of acyclovir, and decrease its renal clearance. However, dose adjustment is not required due to the wide range of therapeutic doses of acyclovir.
Mycophenolate mofetil can increase the AUC of acyclovir and the inactive metabolite of mycophenolate mofetil.
